What do you think can be considered complex? Trigonometry equations? Fixing a leaky faucet? How about saving up and paying your mortgage? What about when it comes to games? Sometimes not everyone can get past not just the story, but one level to the end. A prime example of a challenging game today is Super Hexagon. Perhaps the title doesn’t impress you. But don’t judge it by its cover, just try to play it.
The idea behind Super Hexagon, as it turns out, is pretty much the same as other concepts – we’re given a hexagonally shaped space (unexpected, isn’t it?) And we have to free ourselves from that very location. We are a small arrow that is constantly trying to collide with everything that surrounds it hexagonally. In order to get the arrow out of its confinement, you have to tap on the left or right side of your mobile device’s display. The blocks in the form of curved lines on us are constantly moving, which can lead to the end of the game. To avoid this, each wave of blocks has its own small safety area, into which we must manage to push the “hero”.
Usually you have to be very quick to do it – the arrow rotates around its axis and the blocks keep moving, so it is not an easy mission to get the arrow fixed in the free zone in a split second. And that’s putting it mildly. Once you manage to pass the first stage, the shape of blocks gets more and more bizarre, they move faster and faster, and the time to solve the problem with maneuvering becomes less and less. Every moment in the game that you tackle will feel like an unbelievable bliss.
In Super Hexagon, difficulty levels range from simple to challenging, with plenty of additional challenges and power-ups. Three levels are available to play through, with another three levels following completion. The difficulty levels are Hard, Harder, Harder, Hardest, Hardester, Hardest, Hardest, and Hardest. As an example, the names of the levels are hexagon, hexagonst, hexagonest… And all this richness must still be completed. A level is considered completed when you have managed to stay on it for a certain amount of time and have passed a certain number of stages, which mark the transition between speed and twisty blocks.
The complexity of the atmosphere makes it quite aggressive, and it’s also fuelled by certain nuances. During the game, the monitor screen can move, as well as changing its position throughout the level. With all that said, this madness takes place under the ultra dubstep, which adds a special degree of rhythm to “Super Hexagon”. The music system, which becomes more and more varied with each level, is also difficult to grasp as it changes colours and hues, preventing the player from focusing on the game. For the game, this is only a plus.
However, if you’ve never played Super Hexagon before, you’ll have a hard time understanding what it really is. In this case, you can be proud that you’ve passed at least one level out of the six offered. At the very least, the game can have unpredictable effects on your nervous system and brain. Super Hexagon can probably change the way you look at the world, and perhaps it will be the most challenging and hardcore for you.
