From the very beginning, players can create a unique team of worms: give them names, choose their voices, color and helmet. Once you’ve set up your squad, newcomers to the game can choose from a set of tutorials to help them learn the basics of Worms, while veterans can jump right into multiplayer matches or straight into the single player campaign.
Vanity Worms is easy to learn but hard to master. Armageddon campaign missions come in three flavors, each unique in its execution.
The general combat mode begins with two sets of worms scattered across the map, both enemy and friendly. From there, the home team worm is given a fixed amount of time to move, attack, or any combination of the two in an attempt to deplete the opposing worm’s hit points. This continues until all enemy or friendly worms are dead.
The second type of game requires one worm to work its way through a maze-like map using one of the game’s vehicles. In one mission, your worm makes his way through a maze filled with turrets with only a jetpack at his disposal.
The last type of game is the most difficult, but also the most rewarding to understand. In this type of mission, players are asked to complete a simple task with a given number of items. Usually the worms in this mission cannot move. Instead, the player is required to perform one or more moves to destroy a given number of worms. While these missions are the most unlike the type of combat game found in most games, they are the most fun.
Each of the mission types can be its own unique campaign, but putting them all into one package helps break the repetitive nature of the game. Combat can be frustrating at times, so it’s recommended to play Worms 2 in small doses.
The most significant factor that exacerbates frustration incredibly is control. Armageddon was clearly not designed to be very controller friendly. There have been many times throughout the campaign where the player is constantly struggling to perform the correct action. Towards the end, the game starts to swing so much in favor of the opposing team that one has to wonder if the gameplay is even enjoyable.
If there’s one element of Armageddon that shines brighter than all the rest, it’s the overall style of the game. The development team has created a product where everything from animation to voice acting seems to evoke a whimsical feel, akin to products from the heyday of 16-bit video games.
The weapons at the Worm’s disposal range from a shotgun to an air strike, and depending on which weapon you choose, it may be possible to target a single enemy Worm or try to take out a group strategically. While some weapons will be ignored, many of them will become your best friends. For example, the bazooka is the most commonly used weapon in the game, but it requires the most strategy in terms of wind resistance and angle of fire.
